A lift was constructed on the Nettlebridge branch of the Dorset and Somerset Canal. The lift at Barrow Hill had a rise of 21'and had twin caissons, finished in 1800 it worked well byt the rest of the canal and lifts were never finished due to the financial collapse of the company.
