The Anderson lift was built in 1875 to carry good (mainly salt) between the river Weaver and the Trent and Mersy Canal. The large salt works nearby contributed to most of the traffic and this lift replaced an earlier incline. This lift was fast and more efficient that a flight of locks, it also used much less water. This design is used in many lifts all over the world.
