Faithful Shepherd of Tring

National Grid Ref

The Faithful Shepherd at Tring. An odd type of hill figure this, which sadly or although not surprisingly has vanished, was a piece of text whiten in the chalk. It read:

Faithful lived and Faithful Died
Faithful shepherd on the hillside
The hill so wide, the hill so round
On the day of judgment he’ll be found

This was faithfully scoured on Whitsunday by the people of Tring on Aston Hill in Bucks. The story is that the shepherd so loved the hill that he decided to be buried here and so this was made his epitaph by 1847, only the word Faithful was legible. It is no longer visible.
