Although I am not a great photographer here are a few of my favourite Photo's and hopefully some of my best, I will explain my reasons below and describe where, when it was taken and what equipment I used.
No 10 - Black Bears - British Columbia
Taken with a Nikon D70s with a Sigma 170 - 500. Taken in 2006 from a small boat, which was quite difficult as it bobbed about a bit. I really like this photo, of a mother and two cubs who were quite interested in us but not afraid.
No 9 - Mousier's Redstart - Morocco
Taken with a Nikon D70s with a Sigma 170 - 500. Probably not the best photo of this stunning bird but it was taken on the last day of our trip in 2007. I only had poor shots of this bird which was common in most areas so was particularly happy when I got a decent shot.
No 8 - White Faced Scops Owl - The Gambia
Taken with an Olympus C770uz compact camera. This was taken in the Gambia in 2006, it was a young bird we rescued from some kids who had found it. It spent the day with us and we then took it to the Abuko reserve where they sucessfully released it a few weeks later.
No 7 - Hawk owl - Finland
Taken with a Nikon D70s with a Sigma 170 - 500. What a bird, taken on a beautiful February day (2007) although bloody cold the light was great and it just stared at us.
No 6 - Striated Heron - The Gambia
Taken with an Olympus C770uz compact camera, through a Leica 77 APO scope. One of my best digiscoped efforts taken at Abuko reserve in 2006, the heron just sat there waiting for some prey, allowing me plenty of time to get a great shot.
No 5 - Swallowtail - Norfolk
Taken with an Olympus C770uz compact camera in 2006. The colour contrast in this photo is what make is so good. Taken in the famous garden at Strumpshaw fen on a perfect day. It took a while as they were very mobile but after about 30 mins this one settled and allowed me to get some great photos.
No 4 - Barn Owl - Norfolk
Taken with a Nikon D70s with a Sigma 170 - 500. A very lucky encounter at Snettisham where I was going to see the Little Auks present in 2006. I had to scrabble for the camera that was packed as the owl just quarted slowly past me at about 30'.
No 3 - Eastern Kingbird - Colorado
Taken with a Nikon D70s with a Sigma 170 - 500. Very lucky shot taken in Colorado in 2008, initially I was disapointed as it took flight as I took the shot, but in fact it came out in focus.
No 2 - African Monarch - The Gambia
Taken with an Olympus C770uz compact camera. The contrasting colours of this butterfly are truly stunning and despite all photos of amazing birds I took in the Gambia (2006) this one beat them all.
No 1 - Harvest Mouse - Hertfordshire
Taken with an Olympus C3020z compact camera, which I dropped shortly after in a bar at a stag do in 2004. This was taken at a reserve in Hertfordshire at about 10' as it climbed around in the willowherb. I just love this photo the mouse was demonstrating its climbing ability.
